Across North Carolina, kids are heading back to school, and a good night’s sleep is more important now than ever. Your children’s sleep needs are a bit different than your own, and they will continue to change as your kids continue to grow

How Much Sleep?

According to the Sleep Foundation, this is how much sleep kids need according to their age:

  • Newborns (0-3 months) need 14-17 hours of sleep
  • Infants (4-11 months) need 12-15 hours of sleep
  • Toddlers (1-2 years) need 11-14 hours of sleep
  • Preschool kids (3-5 years)  need 10-13 hours of sleep
  • School age kids (6-13 years) need 9-11 hours of sleep

As you can see, children need more sleep than the average adult. That’s why it’s important that they get to bed early enough to get the amount of sleep they need each night before heading off to school. Sound sleep helps little one’s minds and bodies grow and develop.

Creating a Routine

Over the summer, your children may have gotten off of their typical sleep schedule for the school year. It’s important to re-introduce them to a regular sleep routine to ensure that they are getting enough sleep each night. Have a set bedtime as well as a routine of activities to prepare them for bed (e.g. brush their teeth, read a book, etc.).

Kids, like adults, should sleep in a cool room, with minimal light and sound. If your child is afraid of the dark, use night lights that have soft light that isn’t too harsh. If they like some noise, use a sound machine to help them sleep.

Avoid snacking and drinking sugary drinks before bedtime as this can make it harder for them to fall asleep.

What Kind of Mattress?

Kids are constantly on the move and always growing and changing. Because of this, they likely spend 10+ hours in their bed each day. That’s why it’s important to make sure that they have a healthy mattress– to support their growing bodies and ensure that they get the quality sleep that they need.

When it comes to mattress firmness for your kids, generally speaking, a medium-firm mattress is usually best for growing children. Make sure that they also have a quality pillow to support their neck and shoulders.

The type of mattress that’s best suited for your children depends on their unique sleeping needs. For example, if they tend to get hot at night, then you’ll want to avoid memory foam mattresses. Or if they suffer from allergies or breathing issues, then a latex mattress, which is naturally hypoallergenic, could be a good option for you. Regardless of the type of mattress you get, make sure that it’s a quality one that will offer them the support they need.

If you have a younger child, then you’ll probably also want to invest in a quality mattress cover that will help protect your mattress from those nighttime accidents. There are a number of mattress covers that are catered specifically towards kids.
