If you find yourself tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep each night, this could be for a number of reasons. While sleep apnea and insomnia are medical conditions that a number of people suffer from, oftentimes it is our daily habits that make it harder for us to fall asleep at night. Here are some of the things that could be keeping you awake each night:

  • Electronic use- one of the most common causes for insomnia these days is electronic use. Studies have shown that electronic use, specifically the blue light that these devices emit, can suppress your body’s natural production of melatonin, a hormone that helps you fall asleep. For this reason, you should put away the electronics about an hour before you go to bed. To help you fall asleep, read a book or take a bath before bed instead.
  • Caffeine- caffeine consumption is extremely common among adults. That cup of coffee helps us to wake up in the morning and beat the midday slump in the afternoon. However, caffeine can actually be the thing that’s keeping you up at night, in turn making you even sleepier the next day (which makes you want more caffeine in the morning, and so on and so on). Caffeine has a 4-6 hour half life, which means that it can remain in your body for quite some time. If you drink caffeine, you should avoid doing so after mid-afternoon.
  • Nicotine- nicotine is a stimulant, which means it makes it harder for you to fall asleep at night. In addition, nicotine usage can lead to other sleeping issues, such as sleep apnea. Because of this, and the number of other health issues that nicotine causes, it’s advisable to stop your nicotine usage.
  • Alcohol- although alcohol is a depressant, which means that it can make you feel sleepy, it can actually negatively impact the quality of your sleep, meaning that you toss and turn for a good portion of the night. You should abstain from alcohol consumption at least 4 hours before you head to bed to ensure the best sleep.

If you’re having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, it could be due to one of these common habits.
