This weekend, many across the country, and the world, will participate in daylight savings time. This is a tradition that was first suggested by George Vernon Hudson and William Willet in the late 1800s (many incorrectly attribute DST to Benjamin Franklin), but that did not gain international popularity until World War I. Now, over 70 countries still practice daylight savings time twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring.
During the fall, most of the US (with the exception of Arizona and Hawaii) turn their clocks back, or “fall back,” by one hour on the first Sunday of each November. That means that we will have daylight savings time this weekend. While an extra hour of sleep can seem great (unless you have kids, in which case, you won’t be getting any extra sleep), a number of studies have shown that this shift can negatively impact your sleep patterns.
Our bodies have a natural circadian rhythm which helps us know when to sleep and when to wake. However, although we change the time on our clocks during daylight savings time, our bodies don’t get the memo. So, how can you help your body adjust to the change in time?
To help your body adjust to the change in time, avoid caffeine and alcohol consumption around bedtime, and even after the late afternoon. Next, as it gets closer to bedtime, reduce the lighting in your home, and avoid electronics which cast light and can disrupt your body’s production of melatonin. Leading up to DST, you also can shift your sleep schedule by 15 minutes each day for a few days before to help your body adjust to the time change.
If your lumpy bumpy mattress is keeping you up instead of the time change, then we can help you out with that. Stop by to see us at Factory Mattress and Bedrooms in Goldsboro, NC today.
