You know all about cleaning your sheets and your comforter, but what about your actual mattress? I mean, it’s not like you can pick it up and throw it in the washing machine any time it gets dirty. However, your mattress absorbs sweat, spit, and picks up hair and dead skin cells. So, you definitely do want to keep it clean. Here are cleaning tips for your mattress:
The first thing you’ll want to do is strip your mattress of all bed linens and throw those in the wash. Next, use a brush attachment with your vacuum cleaner to clean off any loose dirt and debris from your mattress. After that, you can use a fabric cleaner to spot clean any stains; apply the cleaner to a washcloth instead of directly to the mattress, and then blot the stain with the cleaner.
If you are able to, it’s a great idea to take your mattress outside to let the sun and fresh air do its work. The UV rays from sunlight can help kill bacteria on your mattress. However, you’ll want to make sure that you sit in an area where it won’t get wet or any dirtier than it already is– a patio or deck can be a good spot.
However, if you can’t take your mattress outside, and we understand if you can’t, then you can cover your mattress with a thin layer of baking soda and let it sit for at least a few hours. After that, you can use your vacuum to clean up all of the baking soda.
To keep your mattress in good shape, you’ll also want to flip or rotate it (depending on what type of mattress you have) a few times a year. In addition, use a mattress cover and a fitted sheet to protect your mattress from stains and extra wear and tear.
