We care about our customers getting the best sleep possible, so we want you to understand exactly what happens while we sleep. Sleep is more than letting the body rest. Sleep is actually a very active state that plays in to your overall health both mentally and physically. Here is exactly what happens to your body while you sleep.

1. REM Sleep

REM Sleep happens in 90 minute increments after the other 4 stages of sleep. Each stage of REM sleep lengthens in increments after each cycle. It happens when you’re falling asleep, dreaming, and waking up. REM sleep is when you experience intense dreaming as your brain experiences heightened cerebral activity. Typically your heart rate and respiration become faster and more erratic. You may also have twitchy fingers, legs, and face.

2. Stage One

This is one of the shortest stages in the sleep schedule. Your brain waves are typically very small and if you were to happen to wake up during this stage, you probably won’t have realized you were asleep in the first place. This is the lightest of sleep stages and you’ll just have closed eyes. This stage typically lasts 5-10 minutes.

3. Stage Two

This is also called ‘light sleep.’ The brain waves will suddenly spike every once in a while. Your heart rate will slow and you’re body temperature will cool down.

4. Stage Three

This is the stage where your sleep will start to deepen and the brain waves will be at the slowest, deepest amplitude. You will also have very low muscle activity.

5. Stage Four

This is when you’re in your deepest, most full sleep stage. You will not be able to be waken up very easily or susceptible to outside stimuli. Your breathing will be very rhythmic and you will have limited muscle activity.

6. And Repeat

The process will begin again and repeat until you wake up
