Factory Mattress & Bedrooms based in Rocky Mount NC knows just how important sleep is and how hard it is to get it in today’s world even if you own one of our high quality mattresses. Between jobs, kids, school, or whatever you’re juggling, it may not be the easiest to get the full night’s rest you deserve. Though you may not have time for the recommended 8 hours of sleep, you can always fit in time for a nap. We have comprised a list of why you should consider becoming a napper today.
1. It’s Evolutionarily Necessary
According to the National Sleep Foundation, “More than 85% of mammalian species are polyphasic sleepers, meaning that they sleep for short periods throughout the day. Humans are part of the minority of monophasic sleepers, meaning that our days are divided into two distinct periods, one for sleep and one for wakefulness. It is not clear that this is the natural sleep pattern of humans.” It is unclear whether we are monophasic by cultural choice or by nature, but according to Stampi, editor of Why We Nap, “polyphasic sleep was the preferred schedule of ancestors of the human race for thousands of years prior to the adoption of the monophasic schedule.”
2. Sleep is Important for Your Health
Our busy day to day lives are a reality of the world we live in, but this comes to the detriment of our adopted monophasic culture. We understand that you’re busy, but not getting enough sleep can harm your health in the long run. According to the CDC, “Persons experiencing sleep insufficiency are also more likely to suffer from chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, depression, and obesity, as well as from cancer, increased mortality, and reduced quality of life and productivity.”
3. It Can Be Done at Any Time at Any Length
Naps are great because they’re catered for you at your sleep needs. Your day to day life can change at a drop of a hat and you may need a nap some days and not others. 20 minutes is the only amount of time that you need to take a quick nap. If you have a longer bit of time, try to stick within 30 minute increments (30 minutes, 60 minutes, or 90 minutes). These are the sweet spots between you and your REM cycle, and it will insure that you have the most restful and productive nap.
